Always Watchful is one of those compositions that reminds me why I became a portrait artist in the first place.
Portraiture allows an artist to show expression and depict a thoughtful moment. I believe that, for the viewer, seeing someone in mid-action or mid-thought evokes a visceral reaction to the experience.
So, here, you are prompted to immediately wonder: “What is happening? What are his eyes seeing?”
To heighten your feeling of drama, I have placed the man in a frozen-in-time pose with his head and shoulders squared; you can feel the tension as he stands perfectly still and surveys his surroundings.
