Learn more about An Idle Moment

An Idle Moment depicts a mid-1800s Blackfoot woman taking a break from the busy Plains life. Her arm rests on a basket made from buffalo hide strips.

Women in Blackfoot society maintained village life and their family’s dwellings. They cooked, gathered wild foods, carried wood, and collected water–to name only a few tasks. It was not often that she had an idle moment.

This painting depicts that rare moment of respite, while the woman rests after filling her basket woven from buffalo hide strips with wild berries. Her beautiful blue and yellow beaded buckskin dress captures the afternoon light.

The woman in the painting was inspired by a Northern Arizona University student who  modeled for me several times in the mid-2000′s.  Her serene features were reflected in several of my works from this time period.

Notice the bold design on the tipis:  This graphic depicts hail. The warriors believed if you had “hail medicine” you could be in the distance and then pound away at the enemy. If you have ever been trapped on the prairie during a hailstorm, you can understand why such a power would be revered.
