Beauty and Grace is simple and pleasing composition that allows you to focus on the young Ute woman’s beauty. I use chiaroscuro, or dramatic contrasts with light, to highlight the lovely, strong structure of her face.
This painting is set in the mid- to late-1800′s, which you can tell by the woman’s abalone shell earring. There is little water in the Ute tribal homeland, so shell accoutrements would have been obtained through trade.
