Learn more about Civilized Warrior
The Corps of Discovery, led by Lewis and Clark, was the first in a wave of American explorers to venture into uncharted territory west of the Mississippi River.
Many of the objects and clothing from the so called “civilized society” made their way up the Missouri River to the nomadic societies of the high plains during the early 19th century.
This warrior wears the coat of an artillery captain that was most likely traded to him by Lewis and Clark in exchange for food, clothing, and safe passage.
His head is topped with a civilian round hat made of beaver felt and he holds a Kentucky long rifle.
To see a depiction of when the Blackfoot first encountered the Lewis and Clark expedition, I invite you to view The Encounter fine art giclee.
