Historical significance

On a cloudy day, July 27, 1806, a small complement from the Corps of Discovery was returning from a risky expedition to explore the northern extent of the Marias River.

Meriwether Lewis, George Drouillard, Joseph and Reubin Field had traveled into Blackfoot country hoping to survey the unknown northern boundaries of the young United States. While Drouillard was off hunting in the river valley, Lewis and the Field brothers came around a bend in Two Medicine River to face a group of young Blackfoot men on horseback.

This moment, as depicted in The Encounter, represents the first contact between the United States and the Blackfoot nation. Emotion on both sides was intense with caution and suspicion running high. Lewis realized the great importance of this meeting, unfurling the American flag and advancing slowly toward the Blackfeet party.

Painting details

Notice how the Blackfoot riders do not use saddles. Bareback horsemanship allowed the men to be agile during buffalo hunts and other tricky maneuvers. Also notice the stone-head warclubs and pikes carried by the hunters. Such weapons were common during the early 19th century.
