Learn more about Undaunted Leader

This is a favorite composition of mine: A profile is such a dramatic way to look at the human face–the angles are interesting to paint and you can use lighting to illuminate the facial high points.

The Chief pictured in Undaunted Leader wears a “trailer” bonnet, so-called because of the magnificent feathers that trail down the wearer’s back. The base of each feather is wrapped with red trade felt and affixed with sinew. The front of the bonnet features classic Lakota beadwork with “greasy blue” beads, which helps to date this image to the mid-to late-1800s. (By contrast, quillwork instead of beads would indicate an earlier time frame.)

Undaunted Leader wears a dyed red ceremonial war shirt as would have been worn on special raids and hunting trips. He holds a utilitarian spear; this weapon would have seen action in hunting and warfare.

The original painting was featured in the 2010 Legacy of the West show at Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale.
