Learn more about Watching the Storm
Everything about this painting is designed to create drama appropriate to the subject matter of this painting: from the perspective to her expression to the brewing clouds.
In Watching the Storm, a young Blackfoot woman has just moved camp with her people. She hasn’t even finished setting up the tipi when the storm beckons. You can imagine what must be going through her mind to have a plains storm blowing in without adequate shelter.
The beads and brass bells on her dress put the time frame of this painting at the mid- to late-1800s. Her earrings are dentalium shell which were obtained through trade with coastal peoples.
